The VCM-III is the latest generation official Ford interface, essential for recent models (Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, Ford Explorer 2020+...) that use advanced electronic architectures not supported by the VCM2. For pre-2020 Ford / Mazda vehicles, the VCM2 is sufficient.
