Which OBD cable
for your BMW?
E, F or G Series: the right cable is not the same. Here's everything you need to know before buying.
You want to diagnose your BMW yourself: read error codes, access engine data, code options or reprogram an ECU, without going through the dealership. Good decision.
But there's one point many people miss when buying: not all BMWs are diagnosed with the same cable. Depending on the generation of your car, the embedded communication protocol is completely different. Buying the wrong cable means ending up with an unusable tool.
This guide gives you the answer directly according to your series.
BMW by Generations: E, F, G
BMW uses an internal nomenclature to classify its body styles by generation. It's not just a matter of design: each generation introduces a different electronic architecture, which completely changes how you connect to it.
E Series: K-DCAN Cable
Important point: the cable has a physical switch on the housing. Position 1 = K-Line, position 2 = D-CAN. If your connection doesn't establish, this is often where it's resolved.
Full E Series Compatibility
E36 (1996+), E46, E39, E60, E61, E63, E64, E65, E70, E71, E81, E82, E83, E84, E85, E86, E87, E88, E89, E90, E91, E92, E93 and equivalent MINI and Rolls-Royce models from the same period.
F and G Series: ENET Cable
Faster and more stable than the K-DCAN, it is also the necessary cable for using E-Sys, the reference coding tool for F series.
F Series Compatibility
F01, F02, F06, F07, F10, F11, F12, F13, F15, F16, F20, F21, F22, F23, F25, F26, F30, F31, F32, F33, F34, F36, F80, F82, F83, F85, F86, F87.
G Series Compatibility (2017 to 2020)
G01, G02, G05, G06, G07, G11, G12, G20, G21, G22, G26, G29, G30, G31.
Recent G Series: ENET DOIP Cable
Same physical connection as ENET (RJ45 plug), different protocol. If you have any doubt about which one to choose for your G, use the configurator.
Older Models: 20-pin Adapter
The adapter converts the 20-pin connector into a classic OBD-II port. It is always used in conjunction with the K-DCAN cable.
Specific Cases: Models Requiring the 20-pin Adapter
Warning: some models produced up to 2002 still use the 20-pin connector. The production year is not enough to know, you must check the exact body style.
